Types of Migraine: Which Do You Have? – Palm Beach Research Center

INTRODUCTION:

Migraines are a common type of headache which triggers a number of symptoms: these include throbbing, intense pain around the head, nausea and vomiting. The severity of these symptoms can vary and each person’s response to migraine treatment can be different. With some treatments such as medication, the pain is reduced for some people with others experiencing no relief at all. To understand different types of migraines, it is important to know what causes it in the first place.

Types of Migraines

It is important to note that there are a number of migraine types. There are times when one type or another is experienced despite the fact that no family history of migraines has been identified. It is important to keep in mind that this does not mean that they do not experience pain, it only means that their migraine pain is different. Some people experience throbbing headaches while others have more intense symptoms.

Hormonal Migraine: This type of migraine is experienced in women whose menstrual cycles have entered menopause and they suffer from hormonal imbalance. This imbalance may be caused by changes in the levels of estrogen, progesterone and other hormones using oral contraceptives to treat it.

Classic Migraine: This type of migraine is the most common type between the types of migraines and involves extreme throbbing pain on one side of the head which usually does not spread further. Other common symptoms of this type include nausea and vomiting, extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

Retinal Migraine: This type of migraine involves a disturbance in the signals from the retina to the brain. It usually starts with flashes of light in a person’s vision which can be followed by momentary blindness and loss of balance.

Aura Migraine: This type of migraine is characterized by an aura before the pain begins. The aura is common in people with a classic migraine but occurs without the headache. For some, the aura may cause a loss of balance or visual disturbance.

Paroxysmal Hemicrania: This type of migraine occurs when a person has two or more migraines in a two-week period. It is characterized by migraine attacks with similar characteristics. Some people consider this rare form of migraine as the most challenging to treat yet the most satisfying because it combines everything that defines a migraine attack.

Hemicrania Continua: This type of migraine occurs when a person has a constant sense of dread and severe pain which is not relieved by medication. This can be a very severe form of migraine especially when combined with other symptoms such as depression, irritability and fatigue.

Other Types: There are other types of migraines which are categorized into primary headaches or episodic headaches. Primary headaches refer to those that come with no underlying medical condition while episodic headaches are those that have the characteristics of migraine attacks.

CONCLUSION

As we can see, there are a number of types of migraines. This may be challenging when trying to determine which one they have and what treatment is best. They need to ensure that they get treatment as soon as possible so they can live a normal life without the pain and worry of an impending attack.

Palm Beach Research offers a clinical study for patients who suffer from migraine attacks. We are testing different study drugs to see if they can reduce or eliminate the number of migraine attacks. These migraine studies offer participants compensation for time and travel up to $550, depending on which study. To learn more and see if you prequalify visit our website palmbeachresearch.com.
