MOVE OA Knee Pain Study

Help us test an investigational study medication for Osteoarthritis Knee Pain.

What is the MOVE OA study?

MOVE is a phase 2 clinical study for adults aged 45 to 80 who are living with knee osteoarthritis and obesity.

MOVE study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the investigational medication, VENT-02, compared to placebo, to determine if the medication can help relieve knee osteoarthritis (OA) pain.

You may be able to join the Move Osteoarthritis Knee Pain study if you:

  • Are 45 to 80 years old
  • Confirmed diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the knee
  • BMI (Body Mass Index) ≥ 30 kg/m 2
  • Other study requirements will apply

May receive compensation up to $1,185 for inconvenience and travel.

Participation in a clinical study is voluntary. You can ask any questions you have and may leave the study at any time, for any reason.

About the Study Medication

What is the study medication?

The investigational study drug, VENT-02, is an oral medication being researched for its potential to reduce inflammation and pain in people with osteoarthritis (OA). VENT-02 is designed to target a key cause of inflammation at the cellular level. VENT-02 works by blocking a protein complex in the body called the NLRP3 inflammasome, which is known to drive inflammation and joint damage in OA. Currently this medication is being investigated in the MOVE clinical trial to evaluate its safety and effectiveness to help reduce knee OA in people who are obese.

Will I receive the study medication?

Participants will be randomized at a 1:1 ratio, where:

  • 1 out of every 2 participants will receive the study medication (VENT-02)
  • 1 out of every 2 will receive a placebo (no active ingredients)

What is an “investigational drug?”

Investigational means the study medication is not approved by regulatory authorities like the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Health Canada (HC), or any other Health Authority that gives approval for new medicines, and it can only be used in clinical research studies like MOVE.

About Osteoarthritis of the Knee

What is osteoarthritis of the knee?

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a degenerative (causing destruction) joint disease where the cartilage in the knee joint wears down, causing pain, stiffness, and limited movement. It’s a common condition, especially in older adults, and often results from wear and tear over time. Osteoarthritis (OA) in your knee is a long-term, progressive condition with no cure, but there are ways to manage OA. Obesity is also linked to osteoarthritis, as extra weight causes extra strain on joints that carry the weight, such as your knees.

Symptoms of knee OA develop slowly and worsen over time. Some of these symptoms are:

  • Knee pain, which can worsen when moving or doing daily activities
  • Stiffness in the knee, often in the morning or after resting
  • Swelling in the joint
  • Cracking or grinding noise when moving the knee

Diversity in Clinical Research Studies

People may experience respiratory diseases in different ways. We plan to include people of different races, ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds in our OA Knee Pain Study. This will help us to see how the research being studied works for different people.

Why are clinical studies important?

Clinical trials are the best way to find out if new treatments or vaccines work and how safe they are. If clinical trials show that a new treatment works and is safe, then it can be approved to be used by the people who need it.

Not all clinical trials test a new treatment or vaccine. “Observational” studies collect information about people’s health during their normal care. This helps researchers learn more about specific health issues.

What is a clinical research study?

A clinical research study is a medical study that helps to answer important questions about an investigational medication or vaccine. such as:

  • Is it effective?
  • What amount. or dose. may work best?
  • How safe is it?
  • Are there side effects?

All medications and vaccines must be tested in clinical research studies before they can be approved for use. Without people taking part in these studies, we would have no new medications or vaccines

Clinical research studies should include groups of people who may be at higher risk based on their age, sex. and race/ethnicity.

An Institutional Review Board (IRB)/Ethics Committee (EC), which protects the rights, safety, and wellbeing of the participants has approved this study.
