About the Bird Flu Vaccine Study
The Bird Flu Study seeks to evaluate a vaccine for Bird Flu (Avian Influenza). Avian (bird) flu virus is normally found in birds, but can sometimes pass from birds to people. To get ahead of the virus, our study is looking at a new investigational vaccine designed to help prevent bird flu in people.
You may be able to join the Bird Flu study if you:
- Are age 18-85
- Are in general good health
Receive compensation up to $600 for inconvenience and travel.
*We have a particular interest in poultry farm workers or people who are in contact with poultry because they are at a higher risk of catching bird flu.
Other criteria will be checked at the first visit and will need to be met to confirm your eligibility for this study.

Why is this study important?
H5N1 is a type of influenza virus that causes avian influenza (or “bird flu”), a highly infectious severe respiratory disease in birds. The H5N1 bird flu viruses normally infect birds but increasing outbreaks of the virus have been reported among mammals. With the information available, rare reports of human infection by H5N1 bird flu virus have been reported and the virus is not known to spread from human to human. However, highly infective H5N1 bird flu viruses are a leading pandemic threat.
The transmission of bird flu from birds to humans is usually rare and can happen when people are in close and repeated contact with infected birds. The influenza viruses constantly undergo changes by changing their genetic makeup. As the virus has adapted to cause outbreaks among mammals, it can further change its genetic makeup and adapt to spread among humans. As H5N1 infection can cause serious disease in humans, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that countries are prepared for an influenza pandemic. Vaccination is one of the best ways to protect against infection and for controlling the spread of the virus in an event of a pandemic.
What is a clinical research study?
A clinical research study is a medical study that helps to answer important questions about an investigational medication or vaccine. such as:
- Is it effective?
- What amount. or dose. may work best?
- How safe is it?
- Are there side effects?
All medications and vaccines must be tested in clinical research studies before they can be approved for use. Without people taking part in these studies, we would have no new medications or vaccines
Clinical research studies should include groups of people who may be at higher risk based on their age, sex. and race/ethnicity.
An Institutional Review Board (IRB)/Ethics Committee (EC), which protects the rights, safety, and wellbeing of the participants has approved this study.
