What is the best way for my doctor to diagnose HPV?
A definitive diagnosis of human papillomavirus can be difficult, despite its prevalence. Individuals who have the HPV virus cannot be tested for the presence of the virus through blood tests.
It is often possible for your doctor to conclude that HPV is the cause of some of the health conditions associated with HPV. The doctor may be able to isolate evidence of HPV from warts or simple skin conditions caused by HPV. Unfortunately, in the case of the development of the more serious health issues caused by HPV infection, it may be years after the initial infection before either you or your doctor notice any adverse health consequences. In order to prevent this disease from developing, it is imperative to arm yourself with information about it when you become sexually active. In addition, it is imperative to have regular health checks throughout your life.
HPV Symptoms
Currently, more than 250 HPV strains have been identified. Fortunately, most of them are benign and harmless, and many of them resolve on their own. It is possible that you will never be aware that the virus has taken up residence in your body. Approximately 20 million Americans are affected by common skin warts at any given time – the result of HPV infection. Although unsightly and embarrassing, these warts eventually disappear with the help of a doctor. Genital warts are caused by other strains, specifically Types 6 and 11. Even though they may be extremely persistent and difficult to control, these are benign and will not harm your health.
The most dangerous strains, however, often cause no symptoms, making them the most dangerous. These types, however, can cause cancer of the cervix, anus, vulva, throat, and neck. Practicing safe sex religiously will protect you to some extent from contracting these strains, but abstinence is the sure-fire way to avoid these. The following are some simple guidelines:
It is true that condoms will protect you, but not 100% of the time.
Anal and oral sex, as well as vaginal sex, are all ways that HPV is transmitted.
You are more likely to contract HPV from someone if you have more partners.
The truth is, there is no way to know for sure whether your partner has HPV or not if they say they don’t. The importance of safe sex cannot be overstated!
It is possible for men and women to contract HPV, especially those who regularly engage in oral or anal sex. Statistics show that gays are particularly at risk.
HPV Treatments
In about 70% of cervical cancers, HPV infection causes the cancer. Vaccines have been approved to protect women against the strains of HPV that cause cancer. It is recommended that women have routine pap smears as soon as they become sexually active, and throughout their lives. Cervical cancer, when found early, is highly treatable, but untreated it can kill. If you take care of your health, you will be safe in the long run regardless of whether you have contracted the disease.
